Scrap Car Paperwork in BC: Prepare Before Collection
Before arranging a scrap car pickup, clarify who owns the vehicle, what documents are available and which steps apply to the transaction. A short conversation before booking can identify questions that should be resolved before the vehicle leaves.
This guide helps you prepare that conversation. For your specific ownership, registration, plate or insurance circumstances, confirm the procedure with an Autoplan broker and the collection business.

Tell the business whether you are the registered owner. If you are acting for a company, relative or estate, explain who has authority to approve the transaction. Permission to enter a property is different from authority to sell or dispose of a vehicle.
Keep available records together. Do not assume possession of the keys is enough to resolve ownership, and do not sign incomplete documents to save time at collection.
Confirm the transaction specific documents
Ask which records need to be inspected, who needs to sign and what you should keep. A normal used vehicle sale, an insurance situation and a vehicle collected for dismantling can raise different questions.
ICBC's used vehicle sale guidance explains its general sale process. Confirm whether that process applies to your transaction rather than treating any website's general checklist as a complete answer for every scrap car.

Missing registration
Raise missing documents at the first inquiry. ICBC provides guidance about vehicles without documentation, but the existence of that process does not guarantee that a particular vehicle is eligible or ready for collection.
Ask a broker what applies to the facts you have. Do not assume a replacement can always be obtained immediately or that paperwork can be bypassed because the vehicle no longer runs.
Finance, estates and insurance claims
Tell the collection business if there is outstanding finance, another owner, an estate or an unresolved claim. Ask the appropriate lender, executor, insurer or broker to clarify authority and requirements before making a collection commitment.
A vehicle being described as a write off does not itself establish who can sell it. Resolve that question independently of the physical pickup arrangement.
Plates, insurance and your records
Ask a broker which plate and insurance steps remain your responsibility. Collection does not automatically establish that all administrative actions have been completed.
Keep the agreed transaction details and the records provided. Confirm what documentation the operator supplies before accepting; do not assume every collection comes with the same certificate or confirmation.
Collection day preparation
Tell the team where the vehicle is parked, whether it rolls and steers and whether access is restricted. Remove personal belongings where safe. Do not climb beneath an unstable car or reposition it simply to prepare for an appointment.
If the vehicle is on shared property or a managed site, confirm entry permission and the contact who can provide it. Let the team know if the situation changes after the assessment.

Questions to resolve before booking
- Who has authority to approve the transaction?
- Which documents are available, and which are required?
- Who needs to be present or sign?
- Are there finance, estate or claim questions?
- What records will each party keep?
- Which plate, insurance or registration actions remain afterwards?
